Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin which functions as an antioxidant, protecting cells against oxidation. Vitamin E is found on cell membranes where it protects unsaturated fatty acids of the membrane from oxidation. Oxidized fatty acids of the membrane impair cell function and enhance cell aging.
In diet vitamin E is most common in vegetable oils, margarines, whole grain and in nuts and seeds. In foods are found eight different tocopherol compounds of which d-alfa-tocopherol is the most widely present in food and has the highest biological activity.
A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and healthy life style.
